DADE HERITAGE TRUST HONORS OUTSTANDING RESTORATION PROJECTS AND PRESERVATONISTS MIAMI, FL – DADE HERITAGE TRUST

Miami’s largest nonprofit historic preservation organization honored this year’s outstanding historic preservation projects and preservationists at its Annual Awards Celebration held Friday, April 27, 2012 at Miami City Hall.  The ceremony was followed by a reception on the rooftop terrace.

Dade Heritage Trust (DHT), founded in 1972 and now celebrating its 40th Anniversary, is the leading voice for saving Miami’s historic places.  The 1000-member organization works through advocacy, education and restoration. Projects have included the Cape Florida Lighthouse, the Freedom Tower, the Miami Circle, the original Old Miami High School, Dr. Jackson’s 1905 Office, the Sears Tower and the Historic Miami City Cemetery.  Dade Heritage Trust also publishes Preservation Today magazine.

To encourage an appreciation of Miami’s architectural and cultural heritage, Dade Heritage Trust since 1982 has recognized outstanding achievement in the conservation of Miami’s historic resources.  DHT’s Annual Preservation Awards are presented in the categories of recently completed Restoration/Rehabilitation/Adaptive-Use Projects, Preservation Work by an Organization, and Preservation Work by an Individual.

Projects are judged on the basis of the proper rehabilitation or restoration of a structure to an earlier or original appearance or its adaptation to a new use in a manner that requires minimal change to the defining characteristics of the building and its site.

Receiving 2012 Dade Heritage Trust Preservation Awards for Projects were:

The Freedom Tower, 600 Biscayne Boulevard, was built in 1925 for the Miami News newspaper.  The building acquired its name and fame as Florida’s “Statue of Liberty” when it became a relief center for Cubans fleeing Castro in the 1960s. Listed as a National Historic Landmark, the Freedom Tower recently underwent a thorough “top to bottom” exterior restoration addressing structural damage and completed an interior restoration of the ballroom.  Honored by Dade Heritage Trust were Miami Dade College, Rodriguez and Quiroga Architects, and Kaufman Lynn Construction.

Villa Serena, 3115 Brickell Avenue, was built in 1913 as the winter home of the famous orator and three-time presidential candidate William Jennings Bryan.  Sold by Bryan in 1920 and falling into disrepair over the years, the house was saved from demolition by next door neighbor philanthropist Adrienne Arsht, who restored it as a guest house.  Honored by DHT were owner Adrienne Arsht and R.J. Heisenbottle, Architects.

The 1924 Jeannette Martinez House, 313 Sarto Avenue, Coral Gables, for its total rehabilitation that included reinforcing the foundation, exterior and interior walls and a new roof.  Honored was owner Jeannette Martinez.

Vizcaya Museum and Gardens East and West Gate Lodges, 3251 South Miami Avenue, Miami, built between 1913 and 1916, for a complete restoration in accordance with the Vizcaya Master Plan after years of neglect.  Honored by DHT were owner Miami-Dade County’s Vizcaya Museum and Gardens and R.J. Heisenbottle Architects.

The Hammock Residence, 5200 SW 63rd Court, South Miami, for a renovation and expansion that respected the original 1940s design by early Florida architect Dean Parmelee.  Honored by DHT were owners Bob and Sue Cowen and Architect Omar A. Morales of FORMGROUP, Inc.

Cherokee Lodge, 3734 Main Highway, Coconut Grove, built around 1917 in the style of an English cottage. To replace the roof to meet building codes and achieve an authenticity of appearance of a soft thatch roof, cedar was laid in wave patterns with “rolled” eave and gable edges that required steam bending.   Owners Cheryl and Cesar Guerrero were applauded and Huber and Associates of Lake City, Florida were honored with a DHT Master Craftsman Award.

Honored with an Outstanding Preservation Organization Award was The Stiltsville Trust, Inc., for its efforts to preserve, maintain and make accessible the seven Stiltsville structures perched in the waters of Biscayne National Park.

Receiving Outstanding Individual Awards were Charles Kropke, an owner of Dragonfly Expeditions and the author of South Beach: Stories of a Renaissance, and Ronnie Hurwitz, for decades of research on veterans buried in the Historic Miami City Cemetery and for his volunteer work cleaning and repairing hundreds of grave markers.

The Henriette Harris Award, DHT’s highest individual honor, was presented to George Neary, Vice President of the Greater Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau, for his many years of Outstanding Community Leadership preserving Miami’s architectural and cultural heritage.

The Collages of Robert M. Swedroe

During childhood, Robert Swedroe constantly sketched buildings and landscapes which evolved to complex assemblages. From 1964 to 1974, working full time as a senior design architect for Morris Lapidus, Robert created 500 collages, which ultimately sold in galleries and at solo shows. When he opened his own firm in 1974, he reluctantly gave up the art to totally devote himself to architecture. But he kept his early art in the public eye with a colorful hard-cover book published in 2002. This second book features 125 dazzling images reflecting the exciting, imaginative directions in his current work. The book can be purchased at Books & Books in Bal Harbour and Miami Beach and The Bookstore at the Grove in Coconut Grove.
